i don’t care what the majority says, that last chapter was amazing and made his character even better. it made him so human. it’s not that he didn’t have any character development, it’s just that in that moments he was having a breakdown, finally expressing his concerns and feelings (his Fi that was hidden by a Te mask), his repressed trauma and everything that’s been going on inside him because this is the only time he GETS to be like that. because who else should he tell, other than armin, his best friend? he wasn’t being whiny or an incel, it’s only realistic that despite wanting the best for your loved ones, it still hurts knowing that when you die they‘ll eventually find someone new if you don’t want them to suffer. he’s selfish and human, just a 19 year-old boy who lost the concept of time and had to watch everything happen before his eyes. even though he doesn’t want to die he’s willing to take upon the sacrifice and plays the villain because he loved his friends. his definition of freedom is impossible and idealistic, he was a slave to his desire for freedom himself. but after accepting reality and rejecting his idealism he gets to have the closure he deserved as a character. the freedom panel really showed how idealistic (we are the most ignorant as children and he was portrayed as one) and false (the clouds under him actually being steam from millions of colossal titans trampling the world) his ideal of freedom was. this was him abandoning his humanity entirely. him winning or loosing really badly wouldn’t have made sense for the theme of attack on titan. in the end it’s about accepting your reality or CHOOSING to reject that reality (mikasa) but you end off happy with either of those paths. number 131 (chapter of the freedom panel) means personal freedom. number 140 means expression of freedom and self-reliance. we never got there because true freedom doesn’t need to be expressed or rely on oneself (he relied on others). number 139 is associated with changes and unforeseen events, also an evolution towards a state of better understanding and personal growth. please try to understand that just because you didn’t get the edgy ending you wanted doesn’t mean it’s a bad one. stop having the reading comprehension of a second grader, misinterpreting every panel and still being stuck with your own versions of his character in your head. tl;dr: erens Fi developed amazingly and his conflicting Fi-Te balance showed us an interesting view on reality, acceptance of fate and finding the will to live in that reality despite the hardships. and hajime isayama is a top tier writer; you’re all just stuck with you own preferred ending.
